About Us . . .
Magi-Cat Adoption Network is a no-kill, cage-free companion animal rescue group licensed by the State of Georgia. We specialize in cat adoptions and operate as a not-for-profit organization. Cats entering our all-volunteer rescue are housed in foster care until adopted. We strive to reduce the numbers of unwanted animals euthanized in county animal control shelters. Our name “Magi-Cat” is in honor of the very first cat we took in.
Magic had been thrown out of a Manhattan high-rise by an abusive family. He survived, but sustained injuries to his jaw and palate which caused him to sneeze violently after eating. Despite his treatment at the hands of humans, he retained a sweet disposition and a love of human companionship. Magic adored nothing more than to play “fetch” with a kitchen sponge, his favorite toy. He left a lasting impression on our lives and inspired us to work for the sake of these friends who give us so much.
Our goal is twofold: to rescue as many animals as possible from neglect, abuse, and unnecessary euthanasia; and to place these animals into lifetime homes where they will never again encounter these dangers. With each successful adoption we conduct, we trust that Magic is still happily living with the family who adopted him, and still methodically stealing the sponge from the sink.
Maya is a lifelong friend of animals who has been involved in animal rescue since 1998. She founded Magi-Cat in 2000 in conjunction with Nancy Geren and George Carless. Maya received her B.A. from Columbia University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia. Her psychology work specializes in the prediction, prevention, and treatment of cruelty to animals, and in the identification of personality disorders underlying the link between cruelty to animals and interpersonal violence. She is a member of the Animals and Society Institute (formerly Society and Animals Forum). Maya lives in Atlanta Georgia with her four cats (Biskit, Chitlin’, Sterling, and Fred) and four horses (Normandy, Naboo, Luther and Dennis the Menace).
Nancy is a Watkinsville, Georgia-based small animal veterinarian with a long history of assisting in rescue work through her practice. She is involved with the SpayGeorgia low-cost spay-neuter program. As the “veterinary arm” of Magi-Cat, Nancy oversees routine pre-adoption medical and surgical procedures, assists in adoption screenings, and provides consultation and support to new adopters.
George has been involved in animal rescue since 1998. He has a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of London. He is currently employed as Supervisor of e-Marketing for a software firm. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia with his foster cats and his beloved computer.
